It's Time to Talk About Conflict

Let's talk about something that often gets avoided: conflict

If you've ever said:

  • "I don't have time to deal with this right now."
  • "I'll just wait for it to blow over."
  • "I'm not good at handling conflict."

You're not alone.

I've never met a leader who naturally feels confident handling conflict. The myth that it should be easy for leaders is just that—a myth.

Here's what I often see in teams:

  1. Avoiding conflict for fear of making it worse
  2. Not knowing the right time or the right words
  3. Being "too busy" to handle the tension

But avoiding it doesn't make it go away. It erodes trust and team accountability.

Let's bring it closer to home: imagine a tank with a small leak, it doesn't look urgent at first, but over time that slow drip becomes a pressure problem. Eventually, it forces a shutdown.

So how do you face conflict without escalating tension? Here's my practical step-by-step guide:

5 Steps to Address Team Conflict with Accountability

  1. Notice It Early: Pay attention to the small signs—short answers, missed handoffs, subtle frustration. These are the cues that something is off.
  2. Make Time, Don't Wait for It: Waiting for the "perfect moment" usually means nothing happens. Block out 15 minutes and prioritize the relationship.
  3. Use "Impact" Language, Not Blame: Try, "When this happened, here is how it affected me and the team..." Keep it honest, not personal.
  4. Ask, Don't Assume: Get their perspective. Try, "What was going on with you in that moment?"
  5. Align on What's Next: Set clear expectations and follow through. Accountability grows with regular check-ins.

You don't need to be an expert in conflict resolution, but you do need to be willing to lean into the discomfort in order to grow.

If navigating conflict feels more draining than productive, you're not alone. But what if you could approach it with clarity, confidence, and a strategy that actually works?
